European Minerals Day 2011

From 13-15 May 2011, various activities were held across Europe to show case the minerals industries to the public at large. Quarry open days, guided plant and geological tours as well as presentations on nature protection projects are just some of the scheduled events. A special focus was given to the protection of biodiversity whereby visitors could discover the unique biodiversity found in rehabilitated quarry and mine sites, which provide habitats for rare plant and animal species (biodiversity).
The European institutions welcome this initiative and lend their support to the minerals sector amongst others by participating in the following events:
13 April 2011, Parliamentary Première on the European Minerals Day 2011 "European Minerals: sustainable extraction for a prosperous Europe", with the support of Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani, and in the presence of Herbert Reul MEP, Chair of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, hosted by Judith Merkies MEP, Rapporteur on the Raw Materials Initiative. 13 May 2011, European Minerals Day 2011 Launch Event took place in Bulgaria, Ruse Region, kindly hosted by Kaolin at the Vetovo quarry. Environment Commissioner, Janez Potocnik lends his personal support to this event (see video message). Programme.

The Minerals Day's success is spreading outside Europe! 13 sites around the globe are taking part: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, China, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, United States and Vietnam. (download list of events)
